How Nurtured Thoughts Psychiatry Works

We’re a small clinical team providing personalised psychiatric care to patients across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and regional Queensland.

Your psychiatrist takes the time to understand your concerns and develops a treatment plan that fits your situation.

Booking and Preparation

Once your appointment is confirmed, we’ll send a short questionnaire for you to complete in advance. It asks about your history, current symptoms and what you’re hoping to address.

Your psychiatrist reviews your responses and any GP referral before your session, so the appointment can stay focused on what matters most.

Your Psychiatry Session

Sessions take place via secure video call. During your appointment, your psychiatrist will:

  • Assess your symptoms and history with a thorough discussion of your challenges and how they’re affecting your day-to-day life.

  • Talk through any diagnosis so you understand what’s contributing to your symptoms and what treatment options are available.

  • Develop a treatment plan together, which may include medication (where clinically appropriate), guidance for your GP and a referral to one of our in-house psychologists if counselling would be beneficial.

Ongoing Care and Support

With your permission, a detailed report and treatment plan is sent to your GP within 2 weeks, so they have what they need to support your continuing care.

If you need additional appointments, most follow-up care will be with the same psychiatrist.

Our admin team is easy to reach between sessions if anything comes up.

ADHD Psychiatrist Melbourne

If you’ve been looking for an adult ADHD psychiatrist in Melbourne, we can usually provide an appointment within two weeks.

For full information about the ADHD assessment, diagnosis and ongoing treatment at Nurtured Thoughts, see our dedicated ADHD service page.

Having Trouble Finding a Psychiatrist in Melbourne?

Finding a psychiatrist in Melbourne can be a frustrating process. Long waitlists, limited availability and high out-of-pocket costs are common, and many patients spend months trying to find a service that's the right fit.

Because all our appointments are via telehealth, you can see a Nurtured Thoughts psychiatrist regardless of where you live in Victoria - from the inner suburbs to regional areas. Most patients are seen within two weeks and Medicare rebates apply if you have a GP referral.

  • Yes, all of our doctors are authorised to prescribe medications, including the full range of medical treatments approved for the management of ADHD in Australia. Your doctor will explain what treatments may be suitable in your initial appointment.

  • Yes, you will need an assessment and diagnosis of ADHD before starting treatment. If you have a prior ADHD diagnosis (from a psychologist, psychiatrist or paediatrician), our doctor will review your history and conduct a shortened assessment. For patients with an existing ADHD diagnosis, the cost for assessment and starting treatment is $995. For a new assessment, our diagnostic and treatment package is $1,950 (payable in 4 interest-free payments, if required). See the ADHD Assessment page for further information.

  • That’s fine. Many of the patients at our ADHD clinic are stable on medications and just require a quick review appointment every 3 months for medication management.

  • Our clinic is based in Queensland, but we see patients across Australia via telehealth. If medication is prescribed, you’ll be able to access it wherever you live in Australia.

  • No. You do not need a referral from a GP or other specialist to access our ADHD clinic.

  • Yes, our psychologists provide ADHD-specific coaching and skill-building for executive function challenges like organisation and time management. This can be particularly useful if you’re struggling at work or with study. Our psychologists can also support you with relationship difficulties linked to ADHD.

  • Once stable, most patients have a review appointment with their doctor once every 3 months. Review appointments are $249.

Frequently Asked Questions

Costs depend on whether you have a GP referral. With a referral, Medicare covers a portion of each appointment and you pay the gap. See our fees page for more information.

Payment plans may be available if costs are a barrier to accessing care. Please contact us and we can explain your options.

How much does it cost to see a psychiatrist in Brisbane through Nurtured Thoughts?

Most patients in Queensland are seen within 2 weeks. We're a small clinic with a stable team, so we keep waitlists short and offer timely appointments, including for new patient assessments.

How long is the wait to see a Brisbane psychiatrist?

A GP referral isn't strictly required, but it's recommended as it allows you to access Medicare rebates on your appointments. You can still book without a referral, but the full consultation fee will apply.

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist in Queensland?

The Nurtured Thoughts clinic is located in Brisbane, but at this point in time, our psychiatrists only provide appointments via telehealth. All psychiatry sessions are delivered by secure video call, regardless of your location.

Can I see your psychiatrists in person at the Brisbane clinic?

Yes, if you've been searching for a psychiatrist, Gold Coast residents can access a Nurtured Thoughts psychiatrist by telehealth. The same applies for the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and other parts of Queensland. There's no need to travel to Brisbane for an appointment.

Do you see patients on the Gold Coast?

Yes, a 291 is a single psychiatric appointment where your psychiatrist conducts a full assessment and produces a detailed 12-month treatment plan for your GP to follow. It’s best if your GP writes "291" or "referring for assessment and management plan" on your referral for the Medicare item to apply.

After the appointment, your GP receives the report and treatment plan within two weeks. Please contact us to check your eligibility for a 291 assessment and confirm the fees for this service.

Do you offer 291 psychiatry assessments for Brisbane patients?

Most patients see us privately, with a GP referral so Medicare rebates apply. Operating outside the public system lets us keep waitlists short and offer consistent care from the same psychiatrist.

Can I see a private psychiatrist in Brisbane through your clinic?

All appointments run by secure video call. We email you a link beforehand, and you join from any device with a camera, microphone and stable internet connection. If medication is prescribed, your script is sent electronically to your preferred Brisbane pharmacy or one closer to home. Research consistently shows telepsychiatry is as effective as in-person care for most mental health conditions.

How does telehealth psychiatry work across Brisbane and QLD?

ADHD is one of the most common conditions our psychiatrists work with. If you’re specifically looking for ADHD assessment, diagnosis or ongoing medication management, see our dedicated ADHD service page for full details on the process and pricing.

Do you treat ADHD as part of your Brisbane psychiatry service?

Our Brisbane psychiatrists provide assessment and treatment for a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, insomnia, addiction, personality disorders and perinatal mental health. We also see patients with autism and complex presentations that don't fit neatly into one category.
