Why Consider
Adaptive Functioning Assessment

  • Access to Supports and Funding: A formal Adaptive Functioning Assessment is often required to access NDIS funding, disability support services, educational adjustments, or workplace accommodations.

  • Clarity and Understanding: Gaining a clear understanding of daily living skills—such as communication, social interaction, and self-care—can provide valuable insights into areas of strength, support needs, and strategies to promote independence.

  • Evidence-Based Tools: We use validated, widely recognised instruments such as the Vinelands-3 and ABAS-3 to ensure our assessments are accurate, comprehensive, and trusted by funding bodies and healthcare providers.

Our
Step-by-Step Process

Initial Intake Session (1–1.5 hours)

We begin with an intake session to explore your background, current concerns, and any areas where support is needed in daily living skills. If it appears unlikely that an Adaptive Functioning Assessment is necessary, Heather will explain this at the outset, allowing you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed.

Assessment Session (4 hours)

During the assessment process Heather utilises semi-structured interviews and clinical observations with the individual and their caregivers (if warranted) to gather information about key areas such as communication, socialisation, daily living skills, and self-care abilities.

Questionnaires for Report

You and/or key people in your or your child’s life (such as family members, teachers, or carers) may complete additional questionnaires to provide multiple perspectives. Heather will then dedicate approximately four hours to reviewing the information and preparing a detailed report.

Feedback Session (1 hour)

Once the report is ready, we’ll schedule a feedback session to discuss the findings, answer any questions, and outline clear recommendations and next steps.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The intake session helps determine whether a full assessment is likely to be beneficial. If Heather feels that an Adaptive Functioning Assessment isn’t necessary, she will explain this during the session so you can make an informed decision about proceeding.

  • A Functional Capacity Assessment measures practical daily living skills, including:

    • Communication (understanding and expressing information)

    • Socialisation (interacting with others appropriately)

    • Learning

    • Self-care (e.g. completing tasks such as dressing, showering, or taking

    • medication, as well as looking after oneself)

    • Self-management (e.g. tasks such as Budgeting, completing household

    • jobs, problem solving and making decisions)

    • Mobility / Motor skills

  • We use gold-standard adaptive functioning tools such as:

    • Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition (Vineland-3)

    • Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, Third Edition (ABAS-3)

    • World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS)

These tools are widely recognised by healthcare providers, educators, and funding bodies like the NDIS.

  • We usually book your feedback appointment about three weeks after your final assessment session. This allows time for all necessary questionnaires to be returned and for Heather to complete a thorough report.

If you require a faster turnaround due to other appointments that your report is required for, please advise Heather during your intake. In urgent circumstances (if all forms are returned promptly), the process can sometimes be finalised earlier pending availability.

  • Yes. We offer Adaptive Functioning Assessments for children aged five and above, as well as adults of all ages. Each assessment is carefully tailored to the individual’s age, needs, and life context.

  • No. As a Clinical Psychologist Registrar, Heather can provide official assessments and reports but does not prescribe medication.

If additional services, therapies, or supports are recommended, Heather will include tailored suggestions in your report and can refer you to appropriate professionals if needed.

  • After your assessment, you will receive a detailed report and have a feedback session with Heather to discuss the findings and next steps.

Depending on the results, your report will include:

    • A summary of adaptive strengths and support needs

    • Formal diagnoses or classifications (if applicable)

    • Practical recommendations for home, school, community, or workplace supports

    • Strategies to enhance independence and participation in daily life

Heather will provide tailored advice based on your or your child’s individual needs.

  • Our comprehensive reports utilise NDIS preferred assessments and include:

    • results from psychometric tools,

    • diagnostic statement per the DSM-5-TR,

    • assessment of functional impact to the individual, and

    • recommendations as appropriate to the individual.

    We cannot guarantee NDIS funding for you. There are several factors that relate to this; however, important ones to consider are;

    1. Your diagnosis may not be covered under NDIS funding (for example, ADHD is not covered under the NDIS even though individuals with an ADHD neurotype may be experiencing significant impacts on their day-to-day functioning)

    2. The NDIS makes determinants based on an individual’s level of functioning within their environments and other factors outside of my individual report. If your diagnosis is one which may be covered under NDIS funding recommendations for the NDIS are included in your report.

    3. If you have additional diagnoses NDIS may also require reports from other clinicians. For example, if you have speech difficulty, NDIS may also require reports from a Speech Pathologist.

We can assist with any documentation needed to support applications for NDIS funding, educational adjustments, disability services, or workplace accommodations, however, Heather does not complete NDIS access request forms. Your report can be submitted as part of your NDIS access request or to other relevant services. We are happy to assist with other necessary forms or letters of support. These may incur an additional cost.
